Alaska - Part 1
Our Alaskan adventure began with a late flight into Anchorage. From there, we took the scenic train to Seward and the coast. The trip was beautiful. The rain and fog intermingled with the mountains for stunning views. We saw moose, dahl sheep, eagles (among numerous other birds), and fields of wild flowers.
Once in Seward, we completed some quick errands and boarded the boat asap. The journey on the Kittiwake was rough and rainy, but I couldn't turn myself away from the bird watching. (Puffins are the cutest thing on the water.) There were also porpoises and otters form the beginning. Capt. Warren found an isolated bay where we would stay for the night. We woke to the most beautiful Alaskan foggy panorama that I could imagine. We then motored over to our first stop of the day, Aialik Glacier. We slowly picked our way through the ice towards the monstrous face to watch huge chunks calve off - the pictures don't do it justice.
On our way to fishing we got distracted by our first whale sighting. It was a young humpback that hung around for a while. Once we reached our fishing destination, the sun broke free for the first time of the trip. It was glorious. Dave caught a halibut, Matt a sea peach. We moved on to sightseeing at the Kittiwake rookery and sea lion camp. The longest sunset I've ever seen was the nightcap to our day of nature.
