Sand Dunes
Matt and I made my little weekend off for May into a mini vacation. We took the scenic route down to the Great Sand Dunes National Park in southern Colorado before camping and hiking yet another 14er. As the dunes popped up in the distance, I was unimpressed, but that changed dramatically once we entered the park and got a closer look. These massive mounds of sand rise up out of nowhere with 1-12 inch deep surprisingly wide creeks bordering them and 14ers backing them. More surprisingly, these creeks turn into beaches almost with tourist setting up umbrellas and tents while eating and watching the kids make sand castles. It was crazy... Not to mention the fact that once you are up on the dunes you kind of feel like you're off in some Arabian desert. (Unfortunately, since I was not expecting to be impressed, we did not alot ourselves enough time to climb very far into the dunes. Instead we went over to the rather lame Zapata Falls. No worries, I'm sure I'll be back.)
