Pike's Peak Race
Pike's Peak is one of two 14ers you can actually drive all the way up to the summit. The people in Colorado Springs are a little special, however, and they race up this 14er. The road is just over 12 miles with 156 crazy mountain road turns. It's half paved, half dirt and gravel. The average passenger car takes at least an hour to go up it... the race cars, about 10 minutes. I should stipulate that 'race cars' includes specially modified vehicles, super stock cars, motorcycles, sidecars, quads, and there were even supposed to be a couple semis (but they didn't run for some reason.) We camped out near halfway on the course at Glen Cove. Cars wen racing by at over 100mph. It was cool.
